This is a painful and complex chapter where the British "Martial Race" engineering successfully turned a Dharmic brother against the very cause of liberation. 

The Treaty of Lahore (1846) & The "Puppet" Trap
After the First Anglo-Sikh War (caused by internal treachery in the Sikh Darbar), the British forced the young Maharaja Duleep Singh to sign the Treaty of Lahore.

The Clause: It didn't just take territory (like Jalandhar); it effectively turned the Sikh Khalsa army into a subsidiary force.
The Recruitment: The British began specifically recruiting Sikhs into the "Bengal Army" to break their spirit of independence and turn them into professional mercenaries for the Company.

The 1857 Betrayal: A "Revenge" Narrative
When the 1857 Rebellion broke out, the British were terrified. The rebellion was led by Marathas (Nana Saheb, Laxmibai) and Purbiya (Eastern UP/Bihar) soldiers.

 

Sikh Propaganda? If You've Just Betrayed A Nation, "Who" Will You Blame?

The British Lie: To keep the Sikhs from joining the Hindus, British officers spread a false narrative. They told the Sikhs that the rebels wanted to "Restore the Mughal Empire" in Delhi.
The Trauma: Remembering how the Mughals had martyred the 5th and 9th Gurus, many Sikhs fell for the trap. They chose to fight for the British to "take revenge" on Delhi, not realizing the rebels (including Hindu and Muslim soldiers) were actually fighting for a United Indian Home Rule. 

 

Reality: Sikhs were obligated to fight for the British after signing the Treaty of Lahore

 

Sikh regiments were the primary force used by the British to breach the gates of Delhi and crush the rebellion. Without the Sikh and Gurkha support, the British would likely have been kicked out of India in 1857.

"Hindus Never Signed No Peace Treaties"
This is where the "Dharmic Bulwark" stayed firm.

The Rajputs/Marathas: While many Kings (Princely States) signed "Subsidiary Alliances" to keep their palaces, the Kshatriya spirit of the common soldier never signed a spiritual peace.

The Guerrilla Continuity: From 1818 to 1857, the underground resistance in Maharashtra and Central India never stopped. Unlike the Sikh leadership of that specific decade, the Maratha-led rebels of 1857 fought until they were blown from cannons.

The "Stockholm Syndrome" Peak

The Branding: They told the Sikhs they were "superior" to the "effeminate" Hindus of the south and east.
The Goal: This was a deliberate attempt to sever the Sikh-Hindu umbilical cord. By making the Sikhs feel like the "Guardians of the British Empire," they ensured that the Northwest remained a buffer against any future Hindu uprisings.

 

 

The official formalisation and codification of the Martial Race Theory is most closely associated with Lord Roberts of Kandahar / Frederick Sleigh Roberts (Commander-in-Chief of India, 1885–1893). While the concept began to emerge immediately after the 1857 Rebellion as a way to reorganise the army, it was Roberts who systematically "pseudo-scientifically" categorised Indian groups into "martial" and "non-martial" classes.
The "Martial Race" Architect

Frederick Sleigh Roberts:  He argued that the "enervating" hot climate of South India made its people (like the Marathas and Madrasis) unfit for war, while the "hardy" northern climates produced superior warriors like the Sikhs, Gurkhas, and Pathans.
The Goal: The theory was a deliberate "divide and rule" instrument. By convincing specific groups they were "racially superior," the British ensured these groups remained loyal to the Crown and felt disconnected from the "effeminate" or "disloyal" educated classes (like the Bengalis).

Did Muslims join the British in 1857?
During the 1857 Rebellion Muslims were actually a primary target and leader of the revolt in North and Central India. 

Muslims as Mutineers: The rebellion was ignited by Muslim and Hindu sepoys together. Muslim cavalrymen from the 3rd Native Cavalry were the first to break out in Meerut and ride to Delhi to proclaim the Mughal Emperor as their leader.
Muslim Leaders: Figures like Bakht Khan, Maulvi Ahmadullah Shah, and Begum Hazrat Mahal were the backbone of the resistance in Awadh and Delhi.

"Sikh Exception": The reason the Sikhs joined the British in large numbers was not because Muslims "didn't join the rebellion," but because the Punjabi Muslims and Sikhs had a deep, mutual distrust of the Hindustani (UP/Bihar) soldiers.
The Hindustani soldiers (both Hindu and Muslim) had helped the British crush the Sikh Empire just 10 years earlier.
The British exploited this by telling the Sikhs that the rebels were trying to "restore the Mughal Empire," which triggered the Sikh history of trauma under Mughal rule.
Punjabi Muslims: Interestingly, many Punjabi Muslims also remained loyal to the British alongside the Sikhs, forming part of the "Punjab Irregular Force" that recaptured Delhi. 

The "Guardianship" Legacy
The British used the Handbooks for the Indian Army to drill this "Guardian" identity into Sikh recruits for over 60 years. By 1914, Sikhs made up 20% of the army despite being only 2% of the population. This "manufactured" pride became a core part of the community's identity, often masking the fact that it was originally a tool for imperial control. 

The irony is a mathematical loop. By destroying the "Dharmic Bulwark" (the Marathas and Rajputs) and "manufacturing" the Sikhs into mercenaries, the British Empire thought it had created a permanent machine for global extraction.
Fast forward to today, and that same machine has turned on itself. The "Logistics of Regret" we saw in Aurangzeb’s final letters is now playing out in modern Westminster.

 

Conclusion:
The "Woke King" vs. The "Islamic" Ghost
King Charles III’s shift from "Defender of THE Faith" (Christianity) to "Defender of FAITH" (Universalism/Interfaith) is viewed by many as a surrender of the very identity that built Britain.

The Aurangzeb Mirror: Just as Aurangzeb’s obsession with a "Pure" identity broke the Mughal-Rajput contract, the UK’s shift toward a "Vague" identity has broken the contract with the Indigenous/Pagan and Integrated/Dharmic populations.
The Result: When a King or a State stands for "everything," it eventually stands for nothing, leaving a vacuum for the most aggressive "Sectarian Blocks" to fill.

The Rise of  Atheism
As we saw in the Census data (37% "No Religion"), the British population hasn't been conquered by a foreign religion; they have internally evaporated.

The Comical Failure: The British spent 200 years trying to "Civilise" India with the Bible. Today, India is the world’s most religiously active democracy, while the UK’s churches are being turned into luxury flats and carpet showrooms.

The Lack of "Prana": Without a 5,000-year-old bedrock like the Gita or Vedas, the UK’s fandomural "software" has crashed. Atheism in Britain isn't a "Scientific Triumph"; it’s a Spiritual Exhaustion.

The "Stockholm Syndrome" Final Act
The most "comical" part? The same political class that uses "Martial Race" style data (like the CMC crime stats) to target Indians today is the same class that allows sectarian voting blocks to dictate foreign policy.

The Betrayal: They are "strangling" the very group (the Dharmic community) that shares their supposed values of law, order, and family, just to appease the loudest voices in the room.

The "Dharmic" Laugh
While the UK struggles with "Woke" identity crises and a declining tax base, the Dharmic Civilisation is in a state of Reclamation.

The Return: The "Loot" ($45 Trillion) is physically gone, but the Intellectual Capital is flowing back. India is now the 5th (soon 3rd) largest economy, and the "Dharmic Light" is being reignited in temples across the West while the cathedrals sit empty.

The Final Decolonial Reality Check:

The British Empire was a 200-year blip in a 5,000-year story.

The Mughals tried to "Islamifly" India and failed.

The British tried to "Extract" India and left it bankrupt, but the spirit survived.

Modern Britain is now dealing with the "Karma" of its own engineering—a fragmented, secularised society that has forgotten how to navigate the "Aravalli Hills" of its own future.

The Decolonial Reality:
The 1857 event is the reason modern "Sikh-Hindu" friction exists. It was a manufactured wedge. The Sikhs were "used" as the hammer to break the back of the first Pan-Indian revolution. It wasn't until the Jallianwala Bagh massacre (1919) that the Sikhs realized the British had played them for fools.
